The authorities staged a successful rescue mission on early Sunday after a boat ran aground a reef off an uninhabited island in GA. Atoll.

The police said the incident was reported at around 12:47 am Sunday.

According to the police, the boat ‘Dherahaa’ ran aground on the reef of GA. Fenahutta, and began sinking.

The back of the boat was submerged when the report came in, said the police.

A team from the GA. Atoll Police and the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) was deployed to rescue the people on the sinking boat.

The police said that everyone on the boat were safely rescued and transferred to an MNDF harbor patrol vessel.

However, the police did not say how many people were on board.

The police said that divers remained at the scene to assess the damage to the boat.

The MNDF was not immediately available for comment regarding the incident, which came amid an active Southwest Monsoon, locally known as the Hulhangu Monsoon, with Maldives Meteorological Service warning of torrential rain and possible flooding across the Maldives through Wednesday.
