EyeCare Hospital has partnered with Singapore health tech company EyRIS to launch an AI-assisted retinal screening service.

The service was launched on Thursday by Ahmed Hamdhan Nasir, Deputy Minister of State for Health, Family and Welfare, together with EyeCare’s Managing Director, Dr. Abdulla Zahir, at the Maldives Health & Family Expo 2026 at Central Park, Hulhumalé.

The introduction of the service brings artificial intelligence into EyeCare’s screening services, supporting the identification of signs of eye conditions and timely referral for further assessment and treatment

During screening, a camera captures photographs of the retina at the back of the eye. EyRIS’s SELENA+ artificial intelligence system analyses these images for signs of diabetic retinopathy, possible glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. The system generates a screening report to help the eye care team identify people who may need further clinical evaluation.

Early detection plays an important role in protecting vision, particularly as people grow older. Some eye conditions develop without noticeable symptoms, making screening valuable in identifying potential concerns before people become aware of changes to their sight.

By combining AI-assisted image analysis with clinical expertise, the service supports prompt screening and informed decisions about follow-up care.

EyeCare says it aims to make eye health screening more convenient and encourage more people to take a proactive approach to protecting their vision.

The service will soon be available at EyeCare Hospital on Orchid Magu, Malé City.
