President commissions Australia-donated Coast Guard vessel 'Imaduddin'

The naval Coast Guard vessel donated by the Australian Government to Maldives was officially launched on Monday evening.

The vessel arrived in Maldives on the 15th of last month.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu commissioned the vessel and placed it into service at a ceremony held on Monday evening.

The vessel has been named “Imaduddin”.

The Coast Guard vessel was acquired by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in collaboration with the Australian Government as part of his policy to strengthen Maldives’ defence resources and safeguard the nation’s independence and sovereignty.

The vessel is brand new and built by Austal Ltd. at the Henderson shipyard in Perth, Australia.

It is named after Sultan Muhammad Imaduddin I, in recognition of his efforts to strengthen Maldives’ defence.

The vessel is equipped with the latest systems and technology for extensive operations at sea. Prior to its arrival in Maldives, the MNDF Coast Guard crew completed specialised training in Australia to operate the vessel.

The vessel will significantly enhance the Navy’s ability to manage the country’s maritime territory, prevent illegal activities at sea and conduct search and rescue operations during maritime incidents. MNDF describes this as a major step forward for Maldives’ role in regional security and stability.

Turkey also donated a military Coast Guard vessel to Maldives last year. In addition, drones have been purchased from Turkey to strengthen Maldives’ security capabilities.

The President has pledged to double the operational capacity of the Coast Guard and develop the MNDF into a force capable of fully managing Maldivian waters.
