Newly redeveloped segment of Ameenee Magu to open on Sunday

The segment of Ameenee Magu that has recently been redeveloped with asphalt is scheduled to reopen to the public this Sunday.

Infrastructure Ministry told Sun on Wednesday that Segment 1 of the road, where redevelopment works have been completed, will reopen on Sunday. The segment stretches from the Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu area to Dharumavantha Hospital.

Asphalt works have also been completed on Segment 2, which includes the four-way junction in front of Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu building. However, an official reopening date for this section has yet to be announced.

The road maintenance project is being undertaken by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The section extending to Dharumavantha Hospital was closed for construction works in late June, resulting in temporary diversions to several bus routes operating in the area.

The Ameenee Magu modernization project was initially awarded to the Road Development Corporation (RDC) during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, for MVR 84.4 million.

Although the final segments of the road were completed after the current administration assumed office, structural defects, described as potholes or uneven patches, subsequently emerged in the asphalt near the Harbor Food Court area. The defects caused considerable inconvenience for motorists and pedestrians, prompting public complaints and criticism regarding the quality of the project.
