Customs seizes over 3.3 kg of cannabis smuggled through Gan Airport; two Indian passengers detained

Maldives Customs Service has seized more than 3.3 kilograms of drugs smuggled into the Maldives through Gan International Airport.

Customs said in a post shared on X that the items were seized last Tuesday. According to the agency, the drugs recovered were cannabis, with a total weight of 3,345 grams.

The items were seized during a search of the luggage of two Indian passengers who arrived in the Maldives from India on Tuesday on suspicion that they were carrying drugs, Customs said.

In a separate case, Mohamed Tafejul, 29, an Indian national who arrived in the Maldives on an IndiGo flight on September 6, was arrested with 440 grams of suspected drugs. His luggage was searched and 80 rubber packets of suspected drugs were found.  

Meanwhile, police seized 156 vape cartridges, nano sticks, and more than MVR 6,000 in an operation conducted in Phase II of Hulhumale' on Tuesday.

Authorities say they are making special efforts to prevent the smuggling of drugs into the country and to take action against foreigners involved in such activities. Security at airports and sea areas has been strengthened by Customs and Police, while foreigners who commit crimes are arrested, prosecuted, deported and sentenced to prison.

In addition, information exchange is being conducted with regional intelligence agencies to disrupt drug networks.
