Customs seizes 11.7 kg of cannabis

Maldives Customs Service has seized more than 11.7 kilograms of drugs.

Customs said the items were intercepted on the 7th of this month at Velana International Airport (VIA). The drugs, 11.7 kg of cannabis, were discovered during further checks on two courier packages brought into the country on suspicion of containing illegal substances.

Customs has not said whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the case.

Drug-smuggling cases continue to rise in Maldives, with narcotics frequently found hidden inside packages or smuggled on the body. Foreign nationals are also arrested in such cases.

The government says it is working to address the growing drug problem.
