Hisaan resigns as MDP’s vice president, attributing decision to Shahid’s resignation

Hisaan Hussain, Vice President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has resigned from her post on Thursday.

Hisaan has formally submitted her resignation letter to MDP’s Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed.

She was appointed MDP’s Vice President in July 2024 following the resignation of the party’s former Vice President Mohamed Shifaz.

In her resignation letter, Hisaan noted that under the current MDP Charter, the Vice President is not elected directly by the party’s general membership. Instead, the position is filled through a presidential nomination subject to approval by the National Council. She therefore stated that her official standing and mandate were inherently linked to that of then-Party President Abdulla Shahid, who nominated her for the position.

Hisaan said that following the resignation of Shahid, and in keeping with democratic principles and established best practices, she did not believe it would be appropriate to continue serving as Vice President without a new mandate.

She assured the party leadership and members that, despite stepping down from her official position, she remains committed to serving the MDP and contributing to its progress as a general member. She also expressed her sincere gratitude to all those who supported and cooperated with her during her tenure.

Hisaan’s resignation comes shortly after Abdulla Shahid resigned as MDP President to contest in the MDP primary for the 2028 presidential election and has already officially launched his campaign.

Meanwhile, MDP’s Deputy Chairperson Ahmed Abdulla also resigned from his post on Wednesday to join Shahid’s campaign.
