Drugs seized by Maldives Customs Service in a previous occasion.
Maldives Customs Service has seized 3.8 kilograms of drugs that were attempted to be smuggled into the Maldives via air freight.
In a post on social media, Customs confirmed that the seizure was made last Friday at Velana International Airport. The narcotics were discovered during further inspection of an air freight shipment suspected to contain drugs.
According to Customs, the seized drugs weighed 3,800 grams in total. Although the estimated street value of the shipment has not been disclosed, preliminary testing identified the substance as cannabis.
The smuggling of cannabis into the Maldives has increased notably in recent times. In response to the growing threat of narcotics trafficking, Customs has strengthened border control measures by deploying modern technology and additional resources to enhance the screening of vessels and cargo arriving by both air and sea.
As the Maldives continues to face growing challenges related to drug trafficking and distribution, relevant authorities are carrying out joint operations aimed at curbing these illegal activities.
