MTCC officials meets HDC officials for discussions regaring land for staff housing project.
Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), one of the country’s largest state-owned enterprises, has begun efforts, with the assistance of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, to secure land to revive its staff housing project, which was previously suspended amid corruption allegations.
In a statement, MTCC said discussions were held with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) this week to obtain land for the ‘Hiyaa’ housing project. The meeting was attended by MTCC’s Managing Director DCP (Retired) Ahmed Saudee, HDC’s Managing Director Brigadier General (Retired) Ali Zuhair, and senior officials from both companies.
MTCC said the failure to construct the staff housing towers has been a major source of disappointment among its employees. The company’s board and management acknowledged the concerns, emphasizing that providing adequate housing is a key priority for employee welfare.
Accordingly, under the leadership of MD Saudi, MTCC approached the President’s Office to facilitate the allocation of land needed to restart the project.
"President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has responded positively to this request and has formally addressed a letter to HDC, requesting that land be arranged for MTCC," the statement read.
MTCC emphasized that its employees are committed workers who contribute tirelessly to the company, adding that renewed prospects of securing housing through the Hiyaa project would be welcomed by staff.
The management said its goal is to finalize all necessary arrangements and begin construction as soon as the land is formally allocated.
The ‘Hiyaa Housing Scheme’ for MTCC employees was initially launched on August 15, 2018. At the time, the company announced plans to construct 400 apartments in two 14-story towers.
However, the project was later suspended after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) initiated an investigation into allegations that the contract had been awarded in a manner that resulted in financial losses for MTCC.
