MTCC developing dry docking facility to repair large vessels such as Mahaa Jarraafu

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that efforts are underway to develop a dry docking facility capable of repairing and servicing large vessels, including its trailing suction hopper dredger, 'Mahaa Jarraafu'.

According to the company, this project is a pivotal strategic initiative aimed at diversifying revenue streams and reducing foreign currency expenditure on overseas maintenance.

In an exclusive interview with state media, MTCC’s Managing Director Ahmed Saudi stated that the government has already granted permission to develop a dry docking facility specifically designed to accommodate large-scale vessels. He expressed confidence that the necessary land or space for the project would be finalized within this month, after which physical work is expected to commence immediately.

Saudi noted that while MTCC currently provides vessel repair services in Thilafushi, space constraints have hindered large-scale investments and the servicing of bigger vessels. The new facility is expected to overcome these challenges and open new commercial opportunities.

"The government has granted us the necessary approval. For instance, vessels like the Mahaa Jarraafu, which are internationally registered and classed, must undergo periodic servicing at overseas docking facilities. This results in significant expenditure in foreign currency," Saudi explained, highlighting the economic benefits of localizing such services.

The facility will be developed under a comprehensive plan formulated in collaboration with the government. MTCC further revealed that the broader vision for this project includes the potential establishment of a transshipment port and bunkering facilities.

The company anticipates that integrating these additional services will further strengthen MTCC's operational capacity and its overall service portfolio.
