West Park works begin under Phase 3; Major ring road upgrades continue

Work has commenced on the third phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment, with development activities now underway in the West Park area as of Tuesday.

According to MTCC, crews have begun installing the stormwater well and upgrading the drainage system in the area, a critical component for a zone that is among the fastest-flooding locations in Male' during the rainy season. To facilitate the works, one half of the road has been closed on Monday, while the remaining half remains open for public traffic. MTCC has apologized for any inconvenience caused to road users.

Under this phase, the West Park stretch will be drained, paved and modernized to meet new urban standards, forming part of the government’s broader effort to improve Male's coastal road network.

Earlier phases of the project have already delivered major upgrades. The stretch from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the North Harbor has been completed and opened to the public, following extensive land reclamation and widening works that expanded the road to four lanes. The segment also includes a 500-motorcycle parking zone, easing congestion and improving traffic flow in one of the busiest parts of the city.

The next section to be redeveloped runs from the MPL area to the Tsunami Memorial Square. The MPL zone, a heavy-vehicle freight area, remains one of the most deteriorated parts of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, with severe potholes and erosion. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has previously stated on the President’s Office’s “The Pulse” podcast that development of this worst-damaged stretch will begin very soon.

He noted that the MPL area will be rebuilt while the commercial port is relocated to Thilafushi, providing a long-term solution to congestion and safety issues linked to freight movement in Male'. The President has said the port relocation will be completed by November 11, 2027.

Meanwhile, the government continues parallel road-repair efforts across Male', including works on Ameenee Magu, while the Chinese government has also committed assistance for road development in Male' and Vilimale.

The administration aims to complete the ongoing Boduthakurufaanu Magu works and open the upgraded sections to the public before the end of November.
