Nearly MVR 13.5M spent on waste cleanup at Fahi flats’ common areas

Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) states it spent nearly MVR 13.5 million in nine months on cleaning up and disposing of waste dumped in the common areas of the Aman towers, also known as the Fahi flats, located in Hulhumale’ Phase II.

FDC began handing over the units in the Aman Udhares and Aman Dhoadhi towers, building under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ public housing scheme, in late September.

As more and more families moved in, the towers fell victim to illegal waste dumping, with many leaving cardboard boxes and even discarded pieces of furniture in the common areas.

The issue became so severe that the FDC began imposing a fine, and initiated cleanup efforts.

In a post on X on Sunday, the FDC shared that it collected 5,040 tons of waste from October through June.

According to FDC, one ton is equivalent to 133 bags of waste, meaning the corporation disposed of 670,320 bags of waste during the period.

FDC states that this includes 3,176 tons of waste collected from October through March, and 1,862 tons from May through June.

The FDC spent over MVR 13.48 million on disposing of the waste dumped at common areas. This includes MVR 8.45 million from October through March, MVR 75,100 in April, and MVR 4.95 million from May through June.

The FDC attributed the high spending on waste collection and disposal to continued dumping of waste in the common areas of the flats.

The corporation urged residents to act more responsibly in order to help minimize such avoidable spending, and create a pleasant environment.
