The preferential trade agreement signed between Maldives and Türkiye took effect on Saturday, offering tariff concession across 75 tariff lines.

A preferential trade area or a preferential trade agreement is a trading bloc that gives preferential access to certain products from the participating countries. This is done by reducing tariffs but not by abolishing them completely, as in free trade agreements.

The PTA, signed between Maldives and Türkiye back on November 4, 2024, took effect on Saturday.

In a post on X on Saturday morning, Maldivian Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed described it as a “a significant milestone” in the economic and trade relations between Maldives and Türkiye, and a moment that builds on the shared vision of Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

“The Agreement exchanges preferential tariff concessions across 75 tariff lines, opening enhanced market access for Maldivian fisheries exports to a market of over 85 million consumers, while giving Maldivian businesses wider access to Turkish products and essential commodities,” wrote Saeed.

“Looking forward to building on this momentum to deliver deeper economic cooperation and lasting mutual prosperity for the people of both our countries.”

According to the Economic Ministry, the PTA exchanges preferential tariff concessions covering 75 tariff lines at the six-digit level of the Harmonized System (HS).

It provides enhanced preferential market access for Maldivian fisheries products to Türkiye, strengthening the competitiveness of one of the Maldives’ principal export industries in a market of more than 85 million consumers.

According to the Economic Ministry, the PTA also enables Maldivian businesses to source a wider range of Turkish products, including essential commodities.

The ministry expects these concessions to diversify import sources, strengthen supply chain resilience, enhance price competitiveness, support export growth, promote industrial development, and foster stronger commercial partnerships between the private sectors of both countries.

The ministry hailed the entry into force of the PTA as “a new chapter in Maldives-Türkiye economic relations” - one that underscores “the enduring commitment of both countries to strengthening economic cooperation, expanding trade and investment, and creating new opportunities for sustainable growth and shared prosperity.”
