CP: Police alone cannot reduce crime; public remains greatest strength

Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed, on Sunday, stated that the police alone cannot reduce crime, stressing that the public remains the greatest strength of the police service.

The Commissioner made the remarks during a special ceremony held at Iskandhar Koshi to commemorate Police Service Day.

Reflecting on the past 22 years, the Commissioner said the period represented more than the passage of time, describing it as a challenging yet successful journey characterized by resilience in overcoming difficulties and the implementation of major institutional reforms.

He noted that the key objective behind separating the police service from the military was to shift from a command-based model to a community-focused service that prioritizes public welfare, safeguards human dignity, and delivers essential services to the public.

"Today, we stand as protectors of the people. Over the last twenty-two years, we have remained committed to building an institution that is impartial, respects legal standards, and is accountable to democratic principles," he said.

Reaffirming that preventing crime is a shared responsibility rather than one that rests solely with the police, the Commissioner described the public as the service’s most important asset. He said the police are committed to working with councils, organizations, and individuals to eliminate environments that facilitate criminal activity, and called on the public to work alongside the police in creating a safer society.

The Commissioner assured that the police service remains prepared to confront any challenge with determination and praised the bravery and dedication demonstrated by its personnel.

He also reminded police officers that public trust cannot be secured through the use of authority, but must instead be earned through sincerity, integrity, and fairness.

"Every police officer is a guardian of the institution's honor and reputation. Our objective must be to consistently uphold the highest standards of sincerity and professionalism," the Commissioner added.

Concluding his address, the Commissioner prayed for the Maldives to remain a safe, secure, and peaceful nation, while expressing his wishes for continued prosperity, progress, and success for the Maldives Police Service.
