India has donated 20,000 doses of measles vaccine and nearly three tonnes of medical supplies to support Maldives’ efforts to contain the ongoing measles outbreak.

The consignment was handed over on Thursday at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Health. Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian presented the items on behalf of the Government of India, while Health Minister Geela Ali accepted them on behalf of the Maldivian government.

India said the assistance will help strengthen Maldives’ vaccination system and bolster the country’s public‑health response. In a statement, the Indian government noted that the support aligns with its “Neighbourhood First” policy and “MAHASAGAR” vision, under which Maldives continues to receive priority.

The statement added that India will remain a reliable partner and leading provider of assistance to Maldives in times of need.

Maldives and India have long maintained close cooperation in the health sector. India has previously supported the training of Maldivian health workers, facilitated emergency medical evacuations, and was the first country to supply large quantities of free vaccines during the COVID‑19 pandemic.

Officials said the latest donation reflects the enduring strength of the relationship between the two countries.
