President: Maldives seeks to deepen multifaceted strategic partnership with India

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has thanked India for its continued support toward the Maldives' development and reaffirmed his commitment to deepening the multifaceted strategic partnership between the two countries.

He made the remarks in letters he sent to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, on the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day.

In separate letters, President Muizzu extended warm greetings, on behalf of the government and people of the Maldives, to the government and the people of India.

In his letter to President Murmu, President Muizzu highlighted the milestone as a testament to India’s democratic strength and socio-economic progress, while recognizing India’s key role in advancing peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.

And in his letter to PMModi, the President expressed gratitude for India's continued support toward the Maldives' development and reaffirmed his commitment to deepening their multifaceted strategic partnership.

Concluding his letters, President Muizzu conveyed his best wishes for the good health and wellbeing of both leaders, and for the continued progress and prosperity of the people of India.

President reiterated these sentiments in a post on his official X account, noting that decades of independence reflect the aspirations, resilience and enduring spirit of the government and people of India.

“Eight decades of Independence reflect the aspirations, resilience and enduring spirit of the Government and people of India. On this auspicious occasion, I reaffirm the commitment of the Government of Maldives to further advance our close partnership built upon mutual respect, shared prosperity and enduring friendship between our two peoples,” he wrote.

India gained its independence from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947, ending nearly 200 years of the British Raj.
