Customs have seized methamphetamine worth more than MVR 1.8 million that was smuggled into the Maldives by air.

According to Customs, the drugs were seized last Sunday at Velana International Airport (VIA).

The confiscated substance weighed 941 grams, with a street value exceeding MVR 1.8 million, Customs said.

No further details have been disclosed regarding the case.

Drug smuggling via air routes has increased in recent months, with both Maldivians and foreigners arrested in multiple cases.

The law has also been strengthened to address what authorities describe as one of the country’s most serious social issues. An amendment to the Drugs Act, allowing the death penalty for importing certain types and quantities of drugs, came into force earlier this year.
