The Maldives Police Service said Thursday evening that legal action will be taken against those who organize rallies or demonstrations outside designated areas without written police permission.

In a statement, police said the freedom of peaceful assembly guaranteed under Article 32 of the Constitution will be upheld within the legal framework. However, they noted receiving complaints that recent rallies held on several streets in Male' have caused significant disruption to public transport, pedestrian movement and nearby businesses.

Citing the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act and its amendment, police said rallies and marches in Male' City may only be held without written authorization in areas designated and declared by the Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology.

Gatherings held outside those designated areas, and in ways that infringe on the rights of the general public, will not be permitted, and police said they will take all necessary measures to disperse such assemblies.

Police added that they will continue to provide security and support for activities conducted lawfully, and urged the public to exercise their rights without infringing on the rights of others.

Protests were held at the Chaandhanee Magu–Majeedhee Magu junction on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, calling for the protection of journalists’ rights and the release of two Adhadhu journalists, Mohamed Shahuzan and Leevan Naseer.
