The documents required by Male' City Council to register the residence of people living in the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) flats will be available through the corporation’s online portal from Wednesday, FDC Managing Director Hamdhaan Shakeel said.

Housing Minister Dr Abdullah Muthalib told Parliament on Tuesday that residents of the FDC flats remain unregistered because the council refuses to process their applications. Responding to a question from MDP MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), the minister said residential registration is completed only after flat owners make their payments. He described the council’s refusal to register residents as an act of harassment without legal basis, adding that the Housing Ministry has instructed the council to register Male' City residents.

Kudu has also written to Mayor Adam Azim, urging the council to work with the Housing Ministry to resolve the issue.

Speaking to Sun on Tuesday, Hamdhaan said he has scheduled a meeting with the council to understand why registration is being withheld.

“The Housing Ministry will have informed the council that there is no problem. There is no reason why they should not issue it,” he said.

Hamdhaan said FDC has not received any communication from the council regarding the refusal to register residents, noting that the only letter received was from the Housing Ministry.

In a video posted on FDC’s official X account on Wednesday, Hamdhaan said he had discussed citizenship registration for flat recipients with the council last August, and had again requested a meeting last week to clarify the difficulties the council claims to be facing.

He said the documents required for residents to complete their registration, without submitting any physical paperwork, will now be accessible online.

“So I am happy to say that from now on there will be no administrative obstacles to your residency in our flats,” Hamdhaan said.
