Fifth arrest made in theft of MVR 4M from a Nalahiya flat a month since the incident

Maldives Police Service has announced the arrest of an additional suspect in connection with the theft of MVR 4 million from an apartment in Nalahiya Residence in March.

With this latest arrest, a total of five individuals have been taken into custody in relation to the theft. The suspects who were previously detained are:

  • Mohamed Noor Ahmed, 40, Kasthoorimaage, Lh. Naifaru
  • Mohamed Afrah, 40, Moonlight Villa, S. Meedhoo
  • Ismail Asif, 36, Daarulavval, R. Maduvvari
  • Ahmed Faris, 39, M. Asia, Malé

The Police had earlier stated that they suspect the involvement of five suspects in the theft, adding that they were searching for the fifth suspect.

On Sunday, the Police announced the arrest of the fifth suspect, Jazeel Mohamed, 47, Jazeela Manzil, HDh. Nolhivaranfaru. Jazeel, who was arrested on Thursday, was remanded in custody for five days when presented before the court to determine his remand status.

According to the Police, only MVR 50,000 out of the MVR 4 million stolen from the Nalahiyaa apartment has been recovered so far.

However, the investigation is largely complete, with the Police currently making final arrangements to forward the case to the Prosecutor General’s Office for formal charges.

Theft continues to be one of the most prevalent crimes in the Maldives, with 283 cases reported in the past month alone, making it the most frequently reported crime during that period.
