The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into a concerning incident on a northern island, involving an eight-year-old girl who was tied to a tree and subjected to physical and psychological abuse.

The Police said the incident at an island in the Upper North Police division involving an eight-year-old girl, who was tied to a tree and subjected to physical and psychological abuse, thereby compromising her dignity, was reported to the police at approximately 13:10pm on Friday afternoon.

In an official statement, the Police confirmed that they are working alongside other relevant authorities to ensure the child’s safety and protection, while simultaneously conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

The case came to public attention following the circulation of a video on social media. The footage depicts the young girl with her hands tied to a tree, struggling to free herself.
