The candidate representing the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has been officially declared the winner of the Dh. Meedhoo Council presidency by a margin of a single vote, following a formal recount of a disputed ballot box in the recently concluded Local Council Election.
The dispute originated after the MDA submitted a formal complaint to the Elections Commission’s (EC) Complaints Bureau last Monday. The party alleged that an individual who was not eligible to vote in the Meedhoo constituency had cast a ballot in the box located at L. Fonadhoo Box No. 3. At the same time, the People’s National Congress (PNC) also requested a recount, citing concerns regarding a ballot that had been declared void during the initial count.
Following its investigation, the Elections Commission confirmed today that an individual without voting rights for the Meedhoo Council presidency had indeed cast a vote in Fonadhoo Box No. 3. As a result, one of the four votes recorded in that box for the relevant seat was invalidated.
As this adjustment effectively resulted in a tie between the MDA and PNC candidates within that specific segment, the EC proceeded with a recount of Fonadhoo Box No. 3 today. According to the provisional recount results, the PNC candidate received 114 votes, while the MDA candidate secured 127 votes in that particular box.
Upon aggregation of the results from all ballot boxes, the MDA candidate, Mohamed Shahid, emerged as the winner with a total of 392 votes. The PNC candidate, Suha Ibrahim, followed closely with 391 votes, thereby losing the presidency by a margin of just one vote.
The recount process was marked by heightened tension and brief unrest, as supporters expressed dissatisfaction over the invalidation of a vote that had previously been attributed to Suha.
In its initial complaint, the MDA highlighted a notable discrepancy: although only four individuals were registered to vote for the Meedhoo Council presidency at the Fonadhoo polling station—and one of them reportedly did not cast a ballot—the official records still indicated that four votes had been cast.
The intensity of the dispute was driven by the extremely narrow margin between the two candidates. Initial provisional results released by the EC had placed the PNC candidate ahead with 393 votes compared to MDA’s 392. However, given that a single ineligible vote had the capacity to alter the overall outcome, the EC’s investigation and subsequent recount proved decisive in determining the final result.
