Polls open in council, WDC elections runoffs in five districts

Polls opened Saturday morning on in local council elections and women’s development committee runoffs in five electoral districts.

Elections Commission (EC) states that polls opened at 08:00 am and will close at 04:00 pm.

The local council and elections took place on April 4.

But votes tied for five of the seats, requiring a runoff.

A second round of voting is being conducted for:

  • A seat in the B. Dhonfanu Council (designated for women)
  • Seat for Dhadimagu district in Fuvahmulah City Council (designated for women)
  • President of the HA. Kelaa WDC
  • A Seat in the HDh. Neykurendhoo WDC
  • A seat in the L. Maavah WDC

Polling stations have been set up in the respective islands as well as in Male’ City.

Total 6,093 people – 3,129 men and 2,901 women – are eligible to vote in the second round.

1,273 people have voted as of 10:00 am, making for a turnout of 20.89 percent.

The EC has said it will be announcing official results on Sunday.
