MDP candidates who contested for Addu City Council and Women's Development Committee (WDC): MDP secured all seats except one secured by PNC candidate.
The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) experienced a significant setback in Addu City, losing 21 of the 22 contested seats despite promoting its “Greater Addu” development vision.
A total of 22 positions were contested, comprising 11 City Council seats—including the Mayoralty—and 11 seats on the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), including the presidency.
Preliminary results indicate that the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secured all 11 City Council seats, including the successful re-election of incumbent Mayor Ali Nizar.
In the WDC elections, the MDP won 10 seats, including the presidential position, while the PNC obtained only a single seat representing the Feydhoo Magudhoo constituency.
The outcome in Addu City reflects a broader pattern, with the PNC facing substantial losses across other districts in the recent elections.
MDP secured all five mayoral seats across the remaining four cities, as incumbent mayors defended their seats.
MDP also swept the majority of the council and WDC seats.
Meanwhile, the majority were against the government-backed amendment to merge the presidential and parliamentary elections, which dealt a major blow to the government.
