Former President Mohamed Nasheed says the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has dealt a huge loss to the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) in the elections held on Saturday.
The Maldivian people voted on Saturday on the local council elections, the women’s development committee elections, and a referendum pushed by the government to synchronize the presidential and parliamentary elections.
As results began coming in, Nasheed wrote on X that the MDP had achieved victory by dealing a huge loss to the government.
“MDP has achieved a huge victory by dealing a massive loss to the government. [MDP has taken] all the cities and most of the islands, and people have rejected the government by a landslide in the referendum,” wrote Nasheed.
He thanked all voters as well as opponents.

Preliminary results from 22 out of 588 ballot boxes received by Sun show 69.3 percent of people voted against synchronizing the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile, incumbent mayors from the MDP appear to be leading in four out of five cities; Male’ City, Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, and Kulhudhuffushi City.
However, incumbent Thinadhoo City Mayor Saud Ali, a candidate from MDP, appears to be losing to Mohamed Ajeeb from PNC.
