Two Maldivian youths have been arrested on suspicion of smuggling over six kilos of drugs.

Maldives Police Service said the suspects were arrested on suspicion of smuggling drugs into the Maldives, and use and sale of drugs.

The suspects have been identified as Ismail Abaan, 25, Ma. Tharijehigeaage, Male’, and Ahmed Dhaan Farhood, 19. Raiymaage, S. Maradhoo.

The suspects were arrested on March 5th during a joint operation carried out by Maldives Customs Service and the Police’s Drug Enforcement Department. Over six kilos of drugs were discovered on the suspects during a search following their arrest.

Both of them have been remanded in custody for five days upon presentation before Criminal Court for a remand hearing.

According to the remand order, the Investigation Officer reported that a total of 6.3 kilograms of drugs were seized from the two suspects. While Farhood initially received the drugs, Abaan later took possession during a controlled delivery operation. However, Abaan denied ownership of the seized substances.

The remand order further noted that a body search of Abaan revealed ten cellophane packets containing substances suspected to be drugs. He claimed that these items were intended for his personal use.

The case is under further investigation by the Police.
