Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed states that the government aims to provide a comprehensive and effective solution to transportation challenges in the Greater Malé area before 2028.
Speaking at a ceremony held on Thursday to inaugurate the government’s taxi services in Villimalé, the Minister said efforts to resolve transportation-related issues across the capital are being carried out under the direct supervision of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
He noted that discussions are currently underway with relevant stakeholders to address key concerns, including traffic congestion, insufficient parking facilities, and challenges associated with vehicle registration.
The Minister added that a detailed strategic plan outlining measures to address these issues will be announced in the near future.
"The President’s instruction is to collaborate with all relevant agencies to establish a sustainable transportation network for the entire Greater Malé area. Our goal is to identify and implement solutions that the public finds acceptable—addressing long-standing challenges that remained unresolved in the past—all before 2028," the Minister stated.
The remarks come as the Greater Malé region continues to experience a vehicle population that exceeds its infrastructure capacity. The situation has contributed to persistent traffic congestion and considerable inconvenience for daily commuters, compounded by a severe shortage of adequate parking facilities.
