The government has on Thursday opened nominations for the post of Police Commissioner for the third time since taking office.
The vacancy follows the honourable retirement of Ismail Naveen, who had served as Commissioner since the 18th of last month. He handed over the responsibilities of the Maldives Police Service to Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikry on the 19th.
Naveen was appointed Commissioner on June 10, after his predecessor Ali Shujau resigned unexpectedly on April 26 last year. Shujau has also since retired.
When the position was last opened, Naveen, Farhad, and South Police Commander Assistant Commissioner Ahmed Shameem contested for the role. In the first round of applications under this government, Shujau and Naveen were the candidates.
The Homeland Ministry has now reopened the position as part of the formal process to appoint the next Commissioner of Police.
