Speech therapy services have officially been launched at the Shaviyani Atoll Hospital, fulfilling a request made by residents during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Funadhoo on October 15 last year. At the time, the President pledged to introduce the service as quickly as possible.
The hospital has now opened registration for the service.
According to Shaviyani Atoll Hospital, the new service covers a wide range of therapeutic needs, including:
Recovery therapy
AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) therapy
Cognitive‑skills therapy
Interpersonal and conversational therapy
Therapy for hearing‑related difficulties
Dysphagia therapy
Voice therapy
Therapy for learning and study‑related challenges
Therapy for speech delay, speech disorders, and comprehension difficulties
Shaviyani has a relatively large population requiring speech therapy, and until now, residents relied on services available only at Haa Dhaalu Regional Hospital or facilities in the Male' area.
The introduction of this service within the atoll is expected to bring significant relief to families who previously had to travel long distances for treatment.
