Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said that the public carries an important responsibility to elect candidates of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) in the upcoming local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.

Shaheem made the remarks while inaugurating the PNC campaign office in Thinadhoo City.

He said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu places significant importance on the development of Thinadhoo, and that maintaining the progress underway in the city requires electing capable councillors. Shaheem added that the PNC has fielded strong candidates for Thinadhoo and urged residents to support them.

“I wish all of you to work hard and sincerely together. Take the time to work together in camaraderie. If you work in this way, this election will be very successful,” Shaheem said.

He described electing PNC candidates to island councils as beneficial, saying the party’s candidates are “civilized, capable and peace‑loving.” Shaheem also called on members of the political opposition to join the PNC, saying this is a time to strengthen unity among the people.

The ruling PNC secured 69 seats in the April 4 local council and WDC elections.

PNC parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Falah previously said the party expects to win around 800 to 900 seats in the upcoming vote.

A total of 1,356 members will be elected nationwide, 678 to local councils and 678 to WDCs.
