A parliamentarian from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) criticized the Pay Commission on Sunday for failure to respond to concerns raised over the changes to the salaries of legal officers at local councils under the pay harmonization initiative.

The changes were implemented on November 1 last year.

In a post on X on Sunday morning, North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) said he submitted the concerns to the Pay Commission on December 7, but has yet to hear back from them in the 50 days since.

Kudu has expressed concern that the changes has reduced the take home pay of legal officers at local councils, with the migration allowance calculated based on attendance, resulting in a lower pay when legal officers are on sick leave or annual leave.

He also raised other concerns linked to the changes.

The pay harmonization initiative is a phased effort to create a unified and equitable salary structure across various public sector departments, including the civil service, judiciary, police, and defense forces.

The changes to the pay structure of remaining civil servants, as well as judicial and council staff, were implemented in November.

However, some have complained that rather than increasing their pay, the changes have reduced their take home salaries.

This also led to protests by judicial staff.

However, the Pay Commission has remained silent on the subject.
