MDP activist Shamin remanded for 10 days

The Criminal Court on Wednesday remanded opposition MDP activist Mohamed Shamin in custody for 10 days.

Shamin was arrested on Tuesday on allegations of obstructing police officers and crossing barricades placed to block the road during the MDP rally held on August 28.

According to the remand order, he is to be held in custody for the safety and security of the community under Article 59 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Police submitted a statement from an officer at the scene, snapshots of CCTV footage, and an intelligence report to the court as evidence against Shamin, who works as a taxi driver.

Shamin was previously arrested in late December 2024 over a protest by taxi drivers, and was later released on conditions.

Another MDP activist, Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed, was also arrested in connection with the August 28 protest. He was released on Tuesday evening after completing his initial five-day remand.
