MDP activist Maimoon released from custody

Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed, an activist from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has been released from custody after being arrested last Monday night.

Maimoon was arrested under a court order on allegations of disrupting public order during an MDP protest held on the night August 28th. He was specifically accused of breaching police barricades and entering an area that had been cordoned off and restricted to the public.

Following his arrest, Maimoon was presented before the Criminal Court, which ordered that he be remanded in custody for five days.

Upon the completion of his remand period, Maimoon was released from Villingili Police Station this evening.

Maimoon, who is employed by the Malé City Council, also serves as Vice President of the MDP Youth Wing. He has been taken into custody during several previous protests organized by the party.
