The Government of China, on Thursday, has handed over USD 2.8 million in emergency assistance for restoration efforts following last year's fire at the building housing several government offices, including the Housing Ministry.

The aid was received by Finance Minister Moosa Zameer on behalf of the Maldivian government.

During the handover ceremony on Thursday, Minister Zameer signed the handover certificate, alongside Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua, who represented the Chinese government.

Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Minister Zameer highlighted the significance of the support provided by the Chinese government, stating that the USD 2.8 million assistance package will be vital in helping restore essential government operations. The emergency aid includes urgently required office equipment and furniture to replace items lost in the incident.

Minister Zameer added that China’s prompt response demonstrates not only practical assistance but also the strength of the bilateral relationship. He noted the long-standing cooperation between the Maldives and China in areas such as infrastructure, development financing, and capacity building. He also pointed out that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visits to China, including his meetings with President Xi Jinping, have deepened mutual trust and expanded the scope of collaboration.

“The Maldives and China share a strong and enduring friendship. Today’s assistance is a clear sign of true partnership, and it will significantly ease the challenges faced by the affected ministries. We are sincerely grateful for this timely and generous support,” Minister Zameer said.

The fire broke out at a block of government buildings located in the Ameenee Magu of Male’ City at around 06:00am on December 12, 2024. The buildings housed the Housing Ministry,  Environment Ministry and three sections of the Male’ City Council – including the Vital Registration Department.
