STELCO staff critically injured in workplace fire dies

Ahmed Azmeel, 43, a STELCO staff seriously injured in fire while working to resolve a power outage at Hulhumale' has passed away.

The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) employee, who was critically injured in a fire amidst efforts to resolve a power outage in some areas at Hulhumale’ Phase II, has passed away.

Some areas in Hulhumale’ Phase I were affected by a power outage at approximately 12:00pm on November 26th.

STELCO said a fault in a medium-voltage panel at the Hulhumalé old powerhouse caused some feeders supplying Malé and Hulhumalé to go offline, triggering the power outage.

The company added that one of its employees was injured while repairing a switchgear at the old powerhouse in efforts to resolve the issue.

In an update on December 1st, STELCO said the employee, who was initially treated at Hulhumale’ Hospital, has been transferred to a hospital in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok.

The deceased staff has been identified as Ahmed Azmeel, 43: an individual who was working as a supervisor at the state utility company. He was a long-time employee who had been with the company for over 21 years. 

Notably, there have been two total blackouts in Male’ and Hulhumale’ this year.

The most recent power outage in the capital occurred on August 9, leaving residents of Malé and Hulhumalé without electricity for almost three hours—just two months after a previous total blackout on June 1, which lasted nearly six hours.
