The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) employee, who was seriously injured in a fire amidst efforts to resolve a power outage at some areas in Hulhumale’ Phase II on last Wednesday, has been transferred to Thailand for further treatment.

Some areas in Hulhumale’ Phase I were affected by a power outage at approximately 12:00pm last Wednesday afternoon.

STELCO said a fault in a medium-voltage panel at the Hulhumalé old powerhouse caused some feeders supplying Malé and Hulhumalé to go offline, triggering the power outage.

The company added that one of its employees was injured while repairing a switchgear at the old powerhouse in efforts to resolve the issue.

In an update on Monday, STELCO said the employee, who was initially treated at Hulhumale’ Hospital, has now been transferred to a hospital in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok.

Notably, there have been two total blackouts in Male’ and Hulhumale’ this year.

The most recent power outage in the capital occurred on August 9, leaving residents of Malé and Hulhumalé without electricity for almost three hours—just two months after a previous total blackout on June 1, which lasted nearly six hours.
