MD: STELCO’s educated, skilled Maldivian engineers among a great source of pride

Dr. Ali Azwar, Managing Director of STELCO, stated on Sunday that the company considers the presence of highly educated and skilled Maldivian engineers a great source of pride.

In a message marking Engineers' Day, Azwar underscored the critical role of engineering in national development and the advancement of civilization. He highlighted that one of STELCO’s key achievements is maintaining a workforce consisting entirely of Maldivian engineers.

He described the dedication of local engineers, who have acquired advanced education and technical expertise across various specializations, as a significant distinction for the company. He added that their commitment forms the foundation of STELCO’s ability to provide uninterrupted, 24-hour services.

“On this important day, I recall the veteran senior engineers who joined STELCO during an era when resources were scarce and pursuing engineering was exceptionally challenging. The development we witness today is built upon their sacrifices and hard work,' he remarked.

Azwar further stated that STELCO places consistent emphasis on strengthening the professional capabilities of its employees through world-class training programmes. He noted that the company has sent engineers to European countries to receive specialized training and gain experience from internationally renowned engineering firms.

Providing statistics on the company’s training initiatives, he revealed that STELCO had facilitated 1,482 training opportunities for its employees both domestically and internationally over the past two years. Of these, 535 opportunities were provided in 2024, while 947 were facilitated in the preceding year.

'We have already established pathways for higher education in the field of engineering. Today, we take immense pride in the fact that many of STELCO’s engineers are products of this company’s own educational and training initiatives,' he said.

Addressing the younger generation, Azwar noted that although fewer students are currently opting to pursue engineering, the field remains essential to innovation and national development. He assured that STELCO remains committed to providing opportunities for talented young people seeking to build careers in engineering.

Concluding his message, he expressed appreciation to STELCO’s engineers for their resilience and determination in overcoming challenges and ensuring the continued delivery of essential services.
