HRCM registers 413 cases, completes 238 in first half of year

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) registered 413 cases between January and June this year, and completed 238 cases during the same period, including those referred to the Prosecutor General’s Office.

According to the commission’s mid-year report, 417 cases remain under investigation. The HRCM also monitored 35 demonstrations during the first six months of the year.

Of the 227 cases lodged with the commission, 166 were filed under the Human Rights Commission Act, while 61 were lodged under the Anti-Torture Act.

The Whistleblower Unit received 13 cases and completed 12 during the reporting period.

In the Southern Regional Office, 33 cases were registered and 22 lodged. The office is currently investigating 98 cases, with 14 cases completed.

The commission also conducted 20 staff training sessions across the country, reaching 59 employees. Awareness programs and trainings were held for 2,657 children, 445 police officers, 430 civil servants, 34 prison officers, and 22 teachers.

To strengthen international engagement, the HRCM held meetings with 24 regional and global stakeholders. A total of 56 staff members, including commissioners, participated in conferences, symposiums, and meetings.

The commission held 47 internal sessions in the first half of the year.

In its legal and policy work, the HRCM proposed amendments to 24 laws and bills, and prepared legal reviews in 56 cases. These include the Housing Bill, the Civil Aviation Bill, and the Bill to Prevent Gang-Related and Other Serious Crimes.
