HRCM probes case of newborn allegedly removed from mother shortly after birth

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has launched an investigation into a case in which an infant was allegedly taken into state custody without the consent of the child’s mother.

In a post on X, the commission said it is probing a complaint filed by a private individual who claims the baby was unjustly removed from the mother shortly after birth.

“A private individual has filed a complaint with the commission alleging that the infant has been unjustly taken into custody without the consent of the mother. The commission is investigating the matter,” HRCM said.

The incident has drawn widespread attention because it follows a recent case where a newborn was placed under state care shortly after birth, prompting the mother to publicly allege that authorities removed her child without consent due to her disability and past mental-health history.

The situation has triggered intense debate online, with many questioning the circumstances of the removal and expressing concern over whether proper procedures were followed.
