The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has granted Ooredoo Fintech Maldives a license to receive inward remittances via PayPal, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital finance landscape.
The license was formally handed over Wednesday by MMA Governor Ahmed Munawwar at a ceremony held at the central bank’s headquarters. Representing Ooredoo were Chairwoman and Fintech Board Member Fatima Al Kuwari, and CEO Khalid Al Hamadi.
Ooredoo stated that the authorization will enable freelancers, small businesses, and families who rely on international transactions to receive funds directly into their m-Faisaa wallets. The company is finalizing its partnership with PayPal and plans to launch the service next year.
“This is a game-changer for Maldivian entrepreneurs and remote workers,” said Khalid Al Hamadi in a statement. “It opens the door to global commerce and financial inclusion.”
The move is expected to benefit both individuals and businesses by facilitating seamless cross-border transactions. Once launched, users will be able to link their PayPal accounts to m-Faisaa, allowing them to send and receive money globally.
Ooredoo emphasized that the PayPal integration is a key step in the Maldives’ journey toward becoming a digital economy.
