Maldives Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla said that he is hopeful of taking the partnership between the parliaments of Maldives and India to greater heights on Saturday, in a Hindi-language tweet following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day state visit to the Maldives.
Abdul Rahman, the chairperson of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), accompanied by other senior Parliament officials, paid a courtesy call on PM Modi at Kurumba on Saturday morning.
Following the meeting, PM Modi shared on X that the two talked about the deep-rooted friendship between Maldives and India, including the close relationship between the parliaments of the two countries.
He described the formation of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group as a welcome step for bilateral ties between the two countries.
“India remains committed to supporting capacity building in the Maldives,” he added.
PM Modi, as is usual during his visits to the Maldives, posted about the meeting in both English and Dhivehi language.
Meanwhile, Abdul Rahman replied to the post in Hindi language.
He thanked PM Modi for the warm meeting, and said he was deeply grateful for his strong words on Maldives-India friendship and India’s continued commitment to parliamentary cooperation.
“The establishment of the Parliamentary Friendship Group is a meaningful initiative — we are hopeful of taking this partnership to greater heights in the coming years,” he wrote in Hindi.

PM Modi has been holding meetings with a number of key Maldivian figures on Saturday, including Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, former President Mohamed Nasheed, and representatives from various political parties.
