Insurance via Zakat fund for those suffering from chronic illnesses

Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced the decision to announced the decision to introduce insurance coverage for individuals on the poverty registry suffering from chronic illnesses such as cancer, starting from the Islamic new year.

According to the Minister, the initiative will be implemented in collaboration with Allied Insurance.

The Minister detailed that the insurance extends to medical care in circumstances it is not covered by Aasandha, life-saving procedures performed overseas and procuring medication from abroad that is not available locally.

Minister Shaheem emphasized that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has undertaken significant efforts to strengthen the Zakat system in the Maldives, including the inception of a dedicated institution for the purpose.

He cited last year as the year with the highest collection of Zakat al-Mal, adding Zakat Fund is used to support the basic needs of individuals listed on the poverty registry.

In this regard, MVR 5,000 has been distributed per person as Zakat al-Mal this year, marking an increase of MVR 1,000 compared to last year.
