Ooredoo Maldives has launched eSIMs for Apple Watch – marking the first time for the service to be available in Maldives.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Ooredoo headquarters on Wednesday morning to launch the company’s ‘Live Unlimited’ campaign to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

An eSIM or embedded SIM is a small chip embedded directly into the Apple Watch that connects to cellular networks, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card.

Ooredoo launched eSIMs in the Maldives under a partnership agreement with Apple.

Speaking to Sun, Hussain Niyaz, the Chief Commercial Officer at Ooredoo, noted that the service offers huge convenience to customers.

“This is very important for the Maldives. A lot of people wear their watch when they go fishing or even jogging. But they are forced to put their phone in some bag and then carry that too. And you are in constant fear of your phone falling into the ocean. There’s none of that fear now. You will continue to receive calls with the SIM embedded to your watch,” he said.

Niyaz said the service will be free for the first six months.

But after the six months, the company will charge a monthly fee of MVR 199 for the service.

Niyaz expressed delight at being able to introduce the latest technologies to the Maldives.
