A major area of Hulhumale’ experienced a power blackout on Saturday evening, which was caused because an electrical feeder had tripped, reports the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO).

The blackout occurred around 23:10hrs on Saturday evening, causing a massive power wipeout across Hulhumale’.

STELCO said that feeder trips are an automatic preemptive measure from the power distribution network in the event of a potential hazardous incident. Some reasons for feeders tripping may include power production overload, temperature increments, and drop in voltages.

The utility provider confirms it has energized three transformer units in Hulhumale’ Phase I and resumed electricity to a major portion, while it was working on reinstating power for the remaining parts.

“Our employees are attending to the needed tasks, and we apologize for any inconveniences,” STELCO said.

The Greater Male’ area faces power cuts occasionally, while more recently theft from transformer units have increased alarmingly.
