MDP’s former deputy leader Mohamed Shifaz who had recently rejoined the party has attributed his decision to better opportunities within the main opposition party to work towards the future of the Maldives.

Speaking at SSTV’s ‘Baaru Hathareh’ program last night, Shifaz said working on ensuring the rights of the people under the constitution they have fought for, and ensuring whether the government operates within the limits of the constitution, is more important than either MDP or The Democrats.

He added that there was no conflict with Democrats, nor will there be any in the future.

Shifaz praised Democrats for operating under exemplary policies, however, said there were greater chances of reaching the aforesaid goal as a member of MDP, than The Democrats.

“At the moment, I believe more work can be undertaken towards the future of Democrats and the Maldives as a member of MDP. There will be no loss for Democrats or members of Democrats due to this,” he said.

Shifaz, who had also served as the deputy leader of Democrats, stressed it was not an easy decision to switch parties after having closely worked with members of the Democrats. However, he noted that his decision does not amount to cutting of members of Democrats.

Shifaz described the current state of Maldives as extremely concerning. As such, he said this was the moment to think about the future of the nation rather than one's own political future.
