Sports car accident: Driver fined, jailed for 3 months

Ibrahim Ikram, the driver involved in a dangerous accident between a sports car and an idle biker, has been sentenced to jail for three months with a fine of MVR 70,000.

The accident took place on July 31, 2024 at Hulhumale’ Phase II near the Vinares housing towers. The car Ikram was driving had lost control during a turn and crashed into an idle biker by the curb. Video footage of the incident shows the biker thrown into air before crash landing head first.

The biker sustained several injuries following the accident, while all three in the car, including Ikram, fled the scene. Police however, managed to arrest them later. Besides Ikram, the suspects included Jinah Ismail, originally from GA. Kanduhulhudhoo, and Ikramul Rahman, from Male’.

Ikram was pressed with four charges, including:

  • Causing grievous bodily harm
  • Negligence resulting in grievous bodily harm to someone
  • Failure to report an accident
  • Omission of providing help to a victim without probable cause

While all four charges were pressed severally, Ikram had pleaded guilty to all four charges and signed a plea with the state.

Ikram agreed for a jail term of one year and 12 days for the offence of causing grievous bodily harm, which was reduced to five months following the plea deal. He has already served time for the offence.

The criminal court changed a jail term of the remaining seven months and 12 days to a fine of MVR 44,800.

For the negligent act resulting in grievous bodily harm to someone, Ikram was sentenced to jail for six months and six days, which was reduced to three months. The remaining three months and three days were changed to a fine of MVR 19,200.

After deducting the time he spent in remand before the verdict, Ikram will be serving a jail term of two months and 17 days.

Additionally, he was sentenced to 27 days to jail for failing to report an accident, which was changed to a fine of MVR 5,400.

For the omission of providing help to someone without probable cause, Ikram was sentenced three days to jail which was changed to a fine of MVR 600 by the Criminal Court.

The Criminal Court judgment on Ikram also declared the other suspect in the case, Ikramul Rahman will be tried at the court via a separate case.
