Dangerous crash between a car and a pickup at airport

A car and a pickup collided in a dangerous accident at Velana International Airport (VIA) this morning.

Photos and videos of the accident circulating on social media show that the car crashed into the pickup from behind. The front of the car which is under the pickup is significantly wrecked.

The accident took place at approximately 9:45am Tuesday morning.

Commenting on the accident, Maldives Police Service the driver of the car and a passenger sitting in the backseat were injured in the accident. They detailed that the passenger did not sustain serious injuries and has been discharged after being treated at the airport clinic.

The driver is being treated at Hulhumale’ Hospital. Although the Police confirmed that the driver sustained injuries to various injuries, no further details were provided.

According the Police, the car had hit road dividers and a van before it crashed into the pickup.

The operator of VIA, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) said preliminary assessments indicate that the accident was a result of the driver of the car suffering a medical emergency.

The accident is under investigation by the Police.
