Road accidents increase again after dip in September

Road accidents which was at its lowest in September of this year was followed by a significant spike in November.

Statistics publicized on Maldives Police Service’s website show that 2,300 accidents were reported last year. Meanwhile, a total of 2,536 accidents have been reported so far this year - exceeding last year's total. 

As per the statistics, September saw the lowest number of accidents this year. This was followed by a significant spike in accidents in October.

Accidents reported this year:

  • January: 263
  • February: 267
  • March 301
  • April: 219
  • May: 255
  • June: 214
  • July: 210
  • August: 204
  • September: 186
  • October 283

The low accident rate in September has been attributed to increased police presence in Male’ area following multiple severe accidents.

Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau has affirmed these efforts will not be period and in this regard, said law enforcement agency seeks to boost street presence, including by deploying senior officers, across the country. The end goal of this initiative is to ensure people come across an officer every five minutes.
