51 y/o child abuse suspect gets 30-day remand

On Tuesday, a 51-year-old individual arrested on Monday for allegedly sexually abusing a 10-year-old minor was remanded for 30 days.

Maldives Police Service on Tuesday shared with local media confirming that an individual was arrested from one of the atolls from Meemu, Faafu, Dhaalu, Thaa, and Laamu with allegations of sexually abusing a minor.

The suspect was presented to the court where they were given a remand of 30 days, police confirmed.

Sexual offenses against minors are treated as serious crimes due to which authorities have denied disclosing the identity and place of birth of the minor.

Police added it is now investigating the case.

Sexual offenses against minors are serious crimes that has been rising in numbers recently.

A week back, sexual abuse of a minor who had been at Hulhumale’ beach was reported as well. Social media reports claimed the individual in question had attempted to isolate children, asking them to meet in private and attempt to grope them.

The government treats sexual offenders against children as serious criminals, and have their identities available publicly in an online registry.
