The Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB), in partnership with local NGO Clean Maldives, has planted 1,000 trees at the Kudagiri Picnic Island.
The trees were planted during a plant-a-tree event at Kudagiri, a picnic island that lies near the Maldivian capital, Male’, on Saturday.
Opening the event, MIB’s CEO Mufaddal Idris Khumri urged people to treat environmental protection as a civic duty.
Saturday’s event was held in partnership with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Asia Forwarding, EyeCare, Maldives Police Service and The Hawks.
A large number of students and parents from Ghiyassudin School also participated in the event.
The plant-a-tree event was held by the MIB to support the program launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on June 5, in celebration of the World Environment Day, to plant five million trees in five years.
According to the President’s Office, the 5 million trees initiative “reflects the government's commitment to safeguarding the country's fragile ecological systems and mitigating the impact of climate change for the benefit of current and future generations.”
The project seeks to plant trees that are endangered in the Maldives. As such, the project will see the planting of 90 species of trees.
